Administration officials confirmed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.
