Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying such medications should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
