Several Injured as Turbulence Strikes A Delta Airlines Aircraft into Sydney
Multiple passengers and crew were hurt when a Delta jet originating in Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia was hit by significant turbulence this past Friday.
Delta Flight 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it landed at Sydney Airport, a representative for the carrier informed. Several cabin crew members required medical attention.
The New South Wales Ambulance Service reported they treated a total of five people, and transported three of them to a medical facility with relatively minor issues that such as pain in the back and migraines. The patients' ages were between their 30s up to the 70s.
It is the latest incident of planes encountering severe turbulence, with experts saying that climate change is a major factor.
There were 245 passengers and fifteen staff members on the Airbus A350, the Delta spokesperson added, adding that the plane landed "without further incident" at the airport at 06:48 local time on Friday morning.
Paramedics said they got a call just three minutes before the plane arrived, and ambulances were waiting on the tarmac.

Last year, 25 people were hurt when a Delta Airlines flight, on a route from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, experienced "severe" turbulence just two hours into the long-haul flight, and was forced to make an emergency landing.
In 2024, those on board on a Singapore Airlines flight experienced a frightening five seconds of severe turbulence. A traveler died and numerous people sustained injuries, as those without seatbelts lifted out of their seats and fell back down.
Turbulence is a common occurrence during flights, and while cases of rough conditions are reportedly becoming more frequent, they are still very rare.
Research indicates that there are approximately five thousand cases of significant in-flight disturbance each year, out of a total of more than 35 million flights that are conducted globally.
Intense turbulence is defined as when the vertical motions of a jet going through unstable air exert in excess of a significant G-force on your body - sufficient force to throw you from your seat if you were not fastened by a safety belt.
As a changing climate shifts the conditions in the sky, experts warn that flying could become less smooth: temperature changes and changing jet streams in the upper atmosphere are expected to boost the regularity and severity of severe turbulence.
